Wednesday 17th June – windsurf *** - Cayeux-sur-Mer – sunny – west – 15/20 mph
Xantos 133 + Tushingham x-15 7m and 38 cm fin

After moving up from the Med. Only stopping briefly in the Loire because of rain!!! :( We decided to spend our last couple of days around the Baie de Somme, a lovely area we have been to many times. After yesterday’s great 36 mile bike ride I fancied a bit of windsurfing on this our last full day in France! :( So after a relaxing, sunny start to the day in our lovely quiet overnight spot by the canal near Saigneville just outside the pretty St Valery sur Somme we head over to Cayeux-sur-Mer. Not the best spot in the baie area but the closest I could park my van to the water!!! and a diversion made getting to Le Crotoy difficult. We parked at the end of the long line of beach huts and I walked the 400m to the water to gauge the wind, spotting a seal close to the shore and loads of cormorants. The sea was a beautiful blue but getting very choppy and getting off this beach can be difficult because of the shorebreak and large pebbles! Because it was approaching high water it was too late to go anywhere else so I decided to give it a try. I rigged my lovely x-15 7m and took out the 133, not ideal in the lumpy conditions but I only have slalom/speed kit with me. I had nearly an hour in the sunshine but the sea was very very lumpy – even worse than my home spot Felixtowe!!! And the wind was a bit up and down too but it was nice to be back on the water again:) Mag found a nice sheltered spot on the beach behind the beach huts and enjoyed her knitting. I came ashore for a break and to see if the sea would calm down when the tide turned, we then had lunch on the beach and read for a while before it clouded over. We packed up and started our trip back to Calais.
We have had another great month here in France – we love our VW camper and have wild camped in some wonderful places:) I have windsurfed 10 times and although still no closer to a 40 ave. I did get a PB for the hour and made a 40 kt peak – not bad considering I hadn’t sailed my speedboard for a year and a half!!! We also had great fun on our mountain bikes and I even went swimming ten times!!! Hopefully we will be back in the Autumn!!!!
